THE METHODOLOGY
Introduction to The Methodology
The Pro Lab's methodology serves as the backbone of our innovative approach to sports development and coaching. Over four decades of research, experimental discovery, and proven methods have shaped this comprehensive framework. At its core, our methodology encompasses a systematic and theoretical analysis of the methods applied across various fields of study. This involves a detailed examination of the body of methods and principles that constitute our collective knowledge base.
The Ecosystems of The Pro Lab
The Shot Lab: The Shot Lab is a cornerstone of our methodology, designed for innovative learning, discovery, development, and research in sports on an international level. Since its inception, The Shot Lab has continuously analyzed coaching and player development, as well as injury restoration across all levels, including professional athletes. This ecosystem facilitates a blend of after-school learning and coaching seminars, where every aspects of the reciprocal process is explored, explained, and applied. Our studies focus on coaching for enthusiasm, development, and winning, and how these elements apply to early specialization, individualism, and critical thinking.
Pro-Shot: Pro-Shot embodies the 3R's (Ready – Rhythm – Release) methodology discovered in the early 1980s. Through extensive research on shooting mechanics, we established the most recognized techniques in basketball today. The evolution of these techniques was formalized by creating one of the first instructional shooting videos in 1990, which organized the teaching process for the Pro-Shot. This method has become the norm for top shooters at every level.
Pro's Developmental League (D-League): The D-League was born from the need to address the developmental gaps in youth sports. Our research team identified a group of "late-starters" and "late-bloomers" who were often excluded from traditional sports development pathways. In the late 1980s, we launched an experimental program with a group of suburban thirteen-year-old girls. This ten-month training program emphasized instruction, aptitude, and tournament play, leading these girls to triumph over state and national AAU champions. This success validated our European-model approach, emphasizing a pro-development focus over a ten-month period.
Shot Doctor: Our methodology, initially popular in the Midwest, began with applications in athletes' driveways and evolved into a widely recognized system known as "The Steppers." This approach to becoming a 3-point shooter uses the 3R's Methodology, and has produced record-breaking shooters and high IQ basketball players across several states.
All-Pro: In response to the changing culture of skill, IQ, EQ, and differentiation in sports, All-Pro has become a sought-after entity for training teen athletes by NBA and WNBA agents over the past two decades. We specialize in preparing athletes from ninth grade through to entering the draft, empowering them to become entrepreneurs and addressing the injury epidemic caused by the dysfunctional development system in sports.
Integrated Skill Rehab (ISR): ISR integrates the body, mind, and skill through natural athletic training and cutting-edge sports psychology. Our program fuses physical and mental rehabilitation, emphasizing the creation of new neural pathways and remapping skills during the rehabilitation process. This holistic approach ensures that athletes not only recover physically but also enhance their mental resilience and skill proficiency.
Conclusion
The Pro Lab's methodology represents a dynamic and evolving approach to sports development. By integrating emotional, moral, and logical reasoning at various developmental stages, we provide a holistic framework that prepares athletes for success both on and off the field. Our comprehensive ecosystems, from The Shot Lab to Integrated Skill Rehab, demonstrate our commitment to fostering well-rounded athletes through innovative and scientifically-backed methods.

HISTORY OF METHODOLOGY
The History of Cross-Pollinating Sports
Our history of cross-pollinating sports at The Pro’s Development Lab began at Ottawa University where Marvin Harvey first utilized Track and Field training to improve basketball performance. This foundational concept drove Harvey’s coaching philosophy, where he blended different sports to create a more comprehensive approach to athlete development. During his coaching career, Harvey expanded on this by coaching multiple sports, including track, football, and both boys' and girls' basketball. Many of his players participated in various sports, with boys often engaging in football or track and field events like the high jump, long jump, and sprinting.
Harvey's background as a P.E. teacher was instrumental in teaching proper techniques across these sports, emphasizing functional movements and biometrics. He opposed repetitive running drills in favor of exercises that integrated fundamental basketball movements, which he believed would make players more comfortable under game-like stress. This led to the creation of the "3-essentials" system: dribbling, passing, and shooting, which became the cornerstone of every practice session. The innovative 48 cone system for dribbling, combined with passing and shooting drills, not only improved conditioning but also enhanced overall skill, making players more confident in game situations.
Lynette Woodard’s experience further exemplified the effectiveness of cross-pollinating sports. She used sprinting to improve her first step quickness and track events to enhance her jumping ability, contributing to her impressive basketball skills, including her ability to dunk. Harvey emphasized that the goal was not to excel in track but to use its principles to become better at basketball, teaching athletes the value of biomechanics and proper body usage to avoid injuries. This interdisciplinary training approach set a precedent for future programs at The Pro’s Development Lab, focusing on sport-specific conditioning and functional movements to maximize performance and prevent injuries.
The Evolution of The Pro’s Development Lab
The Pro’s Development Lab’s evolution began with The Basketball Workshop in the early 1980s, a program designed to assist late starters and late bloomers in improving their basketball skills. Participants were given twenty hours each month of workshop training to demonstrate improvement, and subsequent sessions were tailored to individual needs, ensuring all participants progressed at their own pace.
In the late 1980s and 1990s, the focus shifted to refining specific basketball skills, particularly shooting. The Shooter's Touch Academy was established, emphasizing the "3R's" method: Ready, Rhythm, and Release. This method, pioneered by Harvey, became widely recognized and adopted by top shooters at every level, from high school to professional basketball. The integration of international coaching techniques further enriched the program, making it a hub for skill refinement and development.
The Orlando Magic’s RDV Center played a significant role in The Pro’s Development Lab’s history. This state-of-the-art facility provided a venue for training high school, college, and professional athletes. The 3R’s method, which focused on developing a soft touch and proper shooting mechanics, helped players like Vince Carter, Chucky Atkins, Marie Ferdinand, and Tammy Sutton-Brown enhance their skills. The growing demand for specialized training led to the creation of The Shot Lab in Tampa, Florida, a private facility where elite athletes could train without distractions.
The Shot Lab combined weight training, video analysis, and innovative training methods to cater to top athletes. It offered a unique environment where players could focus on refining their skills, addressing the nuances often overlooked in traditional training settings. This facility quickly became a destination for elite, international athletes from around the world, further solidifying The Pro’s Development Lab’s reputation as a leader in sports development.
Reason for Creating The Shot Lab
Marvin Harvey’s innovative training methods had gained widespread popularity, highlighting the need for a dedicated space where professional athletes could work on the nuances of their game without public distractions. The Shot Lab in Tampa, Florida, was designed to provide this specialized environment, offering comprehensive training facilities that included a weight room, video analysis room, and a floating floor for optimal performance and injury prevention.
The Shot Lab quickly became a sought-after destination for top athletes looking to improve their shooting mechanics and overall game performance. Notable players like Tamika Catchings, Dominique Jones, and Tameka Johnson benefited from the innovative training programs offered at The Shot Lab. The facility’s focus on the 3R’s method, combined with cutting-edge sports science, created a unique training atmosphere that attracted athletes from various countries, including Russia, Korea, and Turkey.
The creation of The Shot Lab marked a significant milestone in The Pro’s Development Lab’s evolution, providing a platform for continuous innovation and excellence in athlete development. This facility embodied the Lab’s commitment to integrating scientific research with practical training techniques, ensuring that athletes received the best possible preparation for their careers. The Shot Lab’s success highlighted the importance of specialized training environments in achieving peak athletic performance, reinforcing The Pro’s Development Lab’s position as a leader in sports development.
The Shot Lab also addressed the need for a holistic approach to training, incorporating not only physical conditioning but also mental and emotional development. The inclusion of video analysis allowed athletes to critically evaluate their performance and make necessary adjustments, while the floating floor minimized the risk of injury, allowing for more effective training sessions. The Shot Lab's comprehensive approach ensured that athletes could develop their skills in a supportive, high-tech environment, paving the way for continued success in their professional careers.
